SLOPE STABILIZATION SOLUTIONS

Slope stability is the potential of soil covered slopes to withstand and undergo movement. Stability is determined by the balance of shear stress and shear strength. A previously stable slope may be initially affected by preparatory factors, making the slope conditionally unstable. Triggering factors of a slope failure can be climatic events which can then make a slope unstable, leading to mass movements. Mass movements can be caused by increase in shear stress, such as loading, lateral pressure, and transient forces. Alternatively, shear strength may be decreased by weathering, changes in pore water pressure, and organic material.

INSTALLATION OF GROUND ANCHORS

An earth anchor is a device designed to support structures, most commonly used in geotechnical and construction applications. Also known as a ground anchor, percussion driven earth anchor or mechanical anchor, it may be impact driven into the ground or run in spirally, depending on its design and intended force-resistance characteristics.

The installation of ground anchors has often proven to be a very specialized field as these type of installations are normally carried out in very weak soils, which can often lead to serious complications when taken lightly, again, being part of the GSA teams field of expertise all previous projects have been completed successfully without any complication.

ROCKFALL PROTECTION

A rockfall refers to quantities of rock falling freely from a cliff or rock face. The term is also used for collapse of rock from roof or walls of mine or quarry workings. A rockfall is a fragment of rock detached by sliding, toppling, or falling, that falls along a vertical or sub-vertical cliff, proceeds down slope by bouncing and flying along ballistic trajectories or by rolling on talus or debris slopes. A rockfall is a natural downward motion of a detached block or serious of blocks with a small volume involving falling, bouncing, rolling, and sliding. The mode of failure differs from that of a rockslide.

The team of GSA has been extensively involved in several specialized projects involving various types of rock fall protection solutions, both from a design perspective as well as from the implementation and execution of these projects. Over the past 15 years we have designed and developed various task specific specialized equipment, especially for working at heights, as well as techniques that are nowhere else to be found in the market place, enabling us to be more efficient and more cost effective than most of our competitors.

SPRAYED CONCRETE SOLUTIONS

Shotcrete, gunite or sprayed concrete is concrete or mortar conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface, as a construction technique. It is typically reinforced by conventional steel rods, steel mesh, or fibres. Shotcrete is placed and compacted at the same time, due to the force with the nozzle. It can be sprayed onto any type or shape of surface, including vertical or overhead areas. Sprayed concrete is another one of the GSA team’s specialist fields of expertise as this yet again often forms part of the rockfall and slope stabilization scenario. The team also has been able to master the application of both dry as well as wet shotcrete whilst having completed numerous lateral support projects in the past.
